So...you're thinking about buying a Schipperke...???

Pua, Nicky and Lani are a lot of fun, but Schips aren't for everyone. They are a high energy

dog, and they keep you on your toes every second. If you are thinking about

getting a Schip, you might consider joining the Schipperke e-mail list first -

directions on how to join my list are HERE

You should also make sure that you are getting

your Schip from a reputable breeder. There are

many reputable Schip breeders out there, but

there are many bad breeders as well.

The breeder I got Pua from let me have her at four

weeks old - way too young to take a pup from her mother.

A good place to start would be to contact the Schipperke

Club of America and they will send you a packet that

includes basic information about the breed as well as a list

of Schipperke Club of America (SCA) breeders. Send a request

for information, and a check for $5.00 to the following address:

The main reason I am warning you to be cautious

is because Pua has epilepsy, which is just one of the

many diseases dogs can inherit through bad breeding

practices. Fortunately, she is one of the lucky ones, her

seizures are infrequent and she is not on any medication,

just a modified diet and a paranoid Mom who makes

sure that Pua is not put in any situations (whenever

humanly possible) that can lower her seizure threshold.

Other problems that run in the breed are:

Legg Perthies disease,

chronic cough,

Cryptorchidism,

Chronic Fungus Infections,

and temperament problems.

For the most part, the Schip is a healthy breed

that isn't **prone** to these problems,

but if you buy your Schip from a back yard breeder

or a pet store, you are increasing

your chances of having problems...

If you are ready to start looking for a breeder,
here are a list of questions that you might
want to ask the potential breeder:

1.  How long have you been breeding Schipperkes? It is preferable to buy a dog from a person who has been breeding for several years, that way they know and understand what breeding entails.
2. Have you even encountered any health problems in your lines? If so what are they?
3. Have you ever encountered any temperament problems in your lines? If so what are they?
4. How many litters do you have in one year?
5. What line does your foundation bitch and dog come from? What do you know about that line?
6. Do you have a limited genetic defects guarantee in your contract and if so what is it?
7. Can I call people with whom you have placed puppies with in the past?
8.  Can I see the pedigrees of the bitch and the dog from which this litter is coming from?
9. Can I meet the bitch and the dog from which this litter is coming from?
10. Are your puppies home raised?
